A Newer Thought

Emerson Ralph Waldo Emerson

The last few weeks we’ve been exploring the roots of New Thought (of which Unity is a part.) And we’ve discovered this beautiful patchwork quilt of various influences from a variety of different sources...

In this blog you will find inspirational quotes from many of those sources ranging from the ancient Vedas, to Plato, to Jesus, through the Transcendentalists, to New Thought pioneers who endeavored to synthesis these various influences and create a working system for applying these profound spiritual truths to their lives.

I invite you to take a passage and meditate on it for a few days, then move on to another passage that speaks to you and meditate on that one.  Please share your experience with this exercise.

From the Isha Upanishads:

“To the seer, all things verily become the Self; what delusion, what sorrow, can there be for him who beholds that oneness?”

From Jesus:

“Neither shall they say lo here, or lo there for, behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21)

From Paul:

“Be ye not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds.” (Rom. 12:2).

From Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“We live in succession, in division, in parts, in particles. Meantime within man is the soul of the whole; the wise silence; the universal beauty, to which every part and particle is equally related; the eternal ONE. And this deep power in which we exist, and whose beatitude is all accessible to us, is not only self-sufficing and perfect in every hour, but the act of seeing and the thing seen, the seer and the spectacle, the subject and the object are one.”

From Phineas P. Quimby:

“Man is made up of truth and belief; and if he is deceived into a belief that he has, or is liable to have, a disease, the belief is catching and the effect follows it.”

From Warren Felt Evans:

“That which we most need is to develop in consciousness our inner and higher life and to give to it what rightfully belongs to it, an absolute sovereignty over all below it. It should be our aim to elevate the principle of thought above the plane of the senses and free it from their distorting influence.”

Emma Curtis Hopkins:

“The Eastern mystic repeats the word “OM” by drawing in his breath and speaking the word twelves times. Then he holds his breath and repeats the word twenty-four times. Finally, he feels that he himself is “OM’. To feel that Om is your substance, your life, your mind, is greater than to feel that the words you say are OM. The only words you can speak and be identified with, wisely, are, “I am my own understanding of God.”

H. Emelie Cady:

“One of the unerring truths in the universe is that there is already provided a lavish abundance for every human want. In other words, the supply of every good always awaits the demand. Another truth is that the demand must be made before the supply can come forth to fill it. To recognize these two statements of Truth, and to affirm them, are the whole secret of understanding faith—faith based on principle.”
